Working Time

The Working Time Directive was introduced in 1998 and set out with the aim to improve working conditions and consequently bring benefit to employees with regards to individual's health and safety. e.g. fewer hours, less tired, less stress and reduced potential for injury.

It sets out to limit the working week to 48 hours maximum, per each seven day period, averaged over a 17 week reference period. Individuals can opt out of this arrangement by signing an "Opt-out agreement". Currently this must be reviewed on an annual basis.

All employment time records for working above the 48 hours must be maintained. There are continuing moves within some member states of the European Union (EU), particularly the United Kingdom, to scrap the opt out. This is meeting with varying reactions from employers and unions alike.
