Noise at Work

The new Control of Noise at Work Regulations came into being in February 2006 and replaces the Noise at Work Regulations 1989.

The significant changes are they reduce by 5dB (from 85dB) the exposure levels at which specific action requires to be taken and there is a new personal weekly exposure limit value of 87dB. There is also a specific requirement for employers on health surveillance with regards to audiometric testing.

Again, the concept of Risk Assessment is not far away. If the work exposes people to 80dB, a Risk Assessment must be undertaken outlining the measures to comply with the Regulations.

Should the work expose persons to noise above 85db, then the Risk Assessment should include a measurement of this level of exposure.

It must be borne in mind that the Regulations equally indicate that the risk to noise exposure is either eliminated at source, (preferably by design principles) or reduced to a minimum.

Where provided, ear protection must be worn with adequate signage warning of the risk to hearing. Suitable information, instruction and training must also be given.
