Electrical Safety

Electric shock is a major hazard in work activities and it also represents one of the major causes of fire. For this reason, it is important that equipment is in a safe condition, which is best ensured by regular inspection and periodic testing. The level of inspection and testing required would vary greatly with the equipment and environment in which it is used. If an inspection system for electrical installations and/or portable electrical equipment, or if maintenance has been neglected, then there is a greater chance that equipment has become dangerous and action will be required. Combined inspection and testing can be carried out at the start of a maintenance system to establish the initial condition of the equipment.

Inspection and Testing

Equipment can be visibly checked after disconnecting it for obvious defects such as the equipment being damaged i.e. cracked plugs, damaged flexes, flexes pulling away from plugs and signs of overheating (burn marks or discoloration). Faulty, or suspect electrical equipment should be immediately taken out of service. All staff should be made aware of this rule.

Any competent member of staff can do this provided they have been given enough knowledge and training. Inspection intervals will depend on the type of equipment and how it is used. Staff should be encouraged to examine electrical equipment before they use it, and it should never be examined whilst plugged into a power source. Whilst some faults cannot be detected by visual means alone, testing checks the electrical integrity of the equipment. The level of testing undertaken is dependent on the type of electrical equipment.
